Job Description
PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE
Primary Purpose: This is a professional public health nursing position that will work with individuals, families, and service providers, including other medical professionals for a variety of public health nursing issues within Ste Genevieve County.
Supervision: Under the general supervision of the Director
Description of work:

Essential Functions:
- Provide a wide range of public health nursing services for clients in Ste Genevieve County
- Plans and coordinates operations for an assigned clinic or grant program and participate in the operation of other community health programs as needed
- Administers adult and child immunizations in accordance with established protocol
- Provides nursing skills for health screenings including but not limited to blood and urine lab testing, TB skin testing, school health screenings
- Participates in the development of public health programs and in planning methods of providing nursing services
- Provide community education programs in a variety of community settings
- Contribute to media outlet information distribution including, but not limited to radio, newspaper, and social media outlets
- Reads and interprets a variety of medical information
- Utilizes a variety of medical equipment
- Demonstrates and teaches nursing care as needed
- Travels to homes, schools, and clinics to perform nursing services or present health care information
- Works with citizen groups and the Department of Health to promote and develop community participation in public health education and activities
- Participates in community assessment activities
- Prepares charts, maintains records, and compiles reports and statistical data as required
Important Functions:
Attends conferences, workshops, and seminars for professional development purposes.
Qualifications Required:
- An Associate degree or a Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing
- Reliable transportation
Licensing/Certification:
Must possess and maintain a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Missouri and be in good standing with the Missouri Board of Nursing.
Abilities:
Provide effective public health nursing services; conduct educational programs, public health studies, and community assessments; administer treatment, medications, and immunizations; effectively apply negotiating and problem solving techniques; interpret and comply with federal and state public health laws and regulations; effectively operate necessary equipment; prepare and maintain reports; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public; perform effectively as a member of a team carrying out the department’s quality management philosophy; perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others.
Experience:
Two years of professional nursing experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Perform bending, kneeling and reaching to both ground level and overhead
- Carry items up to 15 pounds, periodically
- Hold and grip objects
Working Environment:
Primarily indoors with heating and cooling regulated; may be subjected to extreme weather conditions when conducting outdoor clinics; subject to chemical hazards associated with cleaning supplies and antiseptics as well as safety hazards involved with working with needles and body fluids; possible exposure to diseases due to contact with symptomatic or asymptomatic patients.
Miscellaneous Requirements:
- If operating a motor vehicle, must possess a valid MO driver’s license
- Must be available to work irregular hours, as needed
- Must complete annual continuing education as specified and required by various programs
