Community Awareness, Response, and Education (C.A.R.E)
The C.A.R.E. Coalition emerged in October 2004 following a meeting of representatives from the Health Department, Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital, Child Support Unit, The Sainte Genevieve County Sheriff's Office, and MO Extension. This coalition has since grown into more of an emergency management coalition. Chaired by the county emergency management director, the coalition consists of various representatives from most first responder agencies in Ste. Genevieve County as well as local and county government and clergy.
The coalition meets at 12:00 PM on the second Wednesday of each month following the Community Services Forum meeting at the Ste Genevieve County Health Department.
The initial purpose was to train our first responders either by locating resources or providing the training locally and then begin educating and training our citizens in preparing for emergencies and disasters.
Since then, many training hours have been provided to local responders.
The Ready in 3 preparedness program has been provided to many of our residents and is ongoing.
Several tabletop exercises (earthquake, pandemic influenza, tornado) have been held in the county and several more were attended in other locations.
Working together the coalition has been able to access homeland security funding and is currently offering CERT Classes.
CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) is a 40 hour class for members of the community to better prepare them to take care of themselves as well as family, friends, and neighbors during an emergency or disaster. The course provides simple training on subjects such as first aid, light search and rescue, and fire safety.
