WIC Program
The WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program’s goal
is healthier infants and mothers, reduction in infant and maternal deaths and reduction
in incidents of mental retardation. There are both financial and medical guidelines
to be met.
Food checks are issued monthly or bimonthly to eligible clients that can be redeemed
at contracting stores for specific types of formula, cereal, juices, milk, cheese,
eggs, cereals, dried beans or peas or peanut butter. Approximately 350 individuals
receive WIC in Ste. Genevieve County. A breastfeeding peer counselor works with
the young women who desire to breast feed or are currently breastfeeding their babies.
The counselor assists with problems and concerns and helps the mom achieve her breastfeeding
goals. For further information about the program or to determine eligibility, please
contact the health department at 883-7411.
